Obituary:
Rose A. Stephenson, 89, of Hickory Lane passed way Thursday, April 27, 2017 at the Evergreen Manor, with her husband and family by her side. She was born in Lewiston, ME on July 9, 1927 to Michael and Marjorie Ham Harkins. Rose left the local school system at a young age to work so she could help support her family. She did it all: waitressed, cooked, cleaned, supervised and was a receptionist until she retired to spend more time with her son and grandsons.
In the early 1970’s, Rose and her husband Dewey Stephenson moved to Waterboro to be near their son, David Stephenson, and his young sons, David Jr. and Shawn. For many years, Rose and Dewey were regular dancers at local events. Rose also enjoyed being outside and spent her summers camping and hiking in Maine and New Hampshire with Dewey and her grandsons.
Everyone who knew Rose knew of her passion for animals. Not one to sit still, she always had a dog leash in hand, and would be up for hours before the sun to walk her huskies, and to feed the wild foxes around her house. Not even ice storms or subzero temperatures could keep her inside. And when she could, she volunteered at local animal shelters. Finally able to rest, Rose is now relaxing in heaven with her predeceased parents, her sisters Barbie, Pinky, Arlene, Sissy and brother Danny, and friends, as well as the many dogs she cared for over the years.
Rose is survived by her husband of over 62 years, Dewey Stephenson of Waterboro, son David Stephenson and his predeceased wife Bert of Waterboro, a brother Michael Harkins and wife June who recently moved from Waterboro to North Carolina, her grandsons David Jr. and wife Jami, and Shawn and wife Marianne of Waterboro, step-grandsons James Heath and Joseph McNally and his wife Mindy, and five great grandchildren Isabelle, Brianna, Samuel, Paige and Luke.
