Obituary:
Margaret Marden Lemoine, age 91, passed away on Monday, October 19, 2015 at the Seal Rock Healthcare Facility. She was predeceased by her husband George Lemoine on March 23, 2013 and will be deeply missed by a grateful and admiring family.
Margaret (Hatch) Marden Lemoine was born on a large potato farm in Freedom, Maine, the only child of George Henry Marden and Olive Julia Hatch Marden. As a young woman she was an outstanding student and held a lifelong interest in good books, especially well-written histories and biographies. She was particularly thankful in her youth for the kindness of the Belfast Public Library, where they would let her take out many more books at one time than was normally permitted because the long 1930’s trip from Freedom made frequent return visits impracticable. Later in life she worked to pass along that appreciation of learning by working for many years in the Brookside Elementary (George Mitchell) School and at Waterville High School. Her enjoyment of the company of young people helped make those years especially rewarding.
Margaret graduated salutatorian from Freedom Academy in 1942. During her senior year she joined two other classmates for a weeklong student gathering in Washington, D.C. to study the federal government, and while there met First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt for “tea” at the White House. Politics and government remained keen interests her entire life.
In 1944 she graduated from Husson College in Bangor, ME with a degree in professional bookkeeping an immediately began work in Waterville, ME at the stock brokerage firm of Smith, White & Stanley. When Erwin Stanley retired she moved on to the Federal Trust Company where she then led the bookkeeping department for many years. In the days of handwritten ledgers, her team guaranteed that all transactions had been completely and accurately accounted for before going home for the evening. The habits of accuracy, diligence and thoroughness were evident throughout her life.
Always a basketball fan, she met her husband George Lemoine as they joined mutual friends driving to Boston to cheer on the Waterville High boys’ team as they competed in the Boston Garden for a regional championship. They were married in Waterville, ME on July 8, 1956. For more than 40 years they lived in Waterville, ME, raising two sons. Her love, support and guidance created a wonderful home and have been an enduring gift to her family. In recent years she enjoyed the warm friendship of new neighbors in Winslow, ME, and spent her final months near her sons and their families in Saco, Maine.
She is survived by her two sons, David Lemoine and John Lemoine, their wives, Karen Lemoine and Dianne Lemoine, and by five grandchildren Joseph Lemoine, John R. (Jack) Lemoine, Mary Lemoine (David), Andrew Lemoine and Owen Lemoine (John).
