Visiting hours will be on Thursday evening, Dec. 5, from 6-8 PM at the Dennett, Craig & Pate Funeral Home, located at the corner of Rts 202 and 4A (13 Portland Rd) in Buxton (Bar Mills). A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Friday morning at 11 AM. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery near Buxton Center. Rev. Laura Holt-Haslam will officiate.
Obituary:
BUXTON- “Bill” Wilmot E. Lewis, age 91 of Long Plains Road, passed away at his home on Dec. 3, 2013, surrounded by family and friends.
He was born in Saco on Nov. 17, 1922, a son of the late Edward and Florence (Sanborn) Lewis.
Bill left school in Buxton in the 8th grade due to his father’s death and began his work life.
Throughout his years, Bill worked for many different farms. He began by picking cucumbers with his mother, working at Hurlin Smith’s farm, Justin Merrill’s Farm, the Davis farm, Dr. Holland’s Farm as a herdsman, and Dana Elliot’s farm to name a few. He also managed his own farm for many years and operated a milk route for 10 years. While working at these farms, he often worked for low wages while trying to support his family and his own farm.
Bill also worked for the State of Maine on the Road Crew. While Bill operated his milk route, he was also employed by the Town of Buxton as Road Commissioner for 3 years, and worked at the Gorham State Teachers College as a custodian.
Mr. Lewis was very civic minded. He was a Selectman for 12 years, dog officer for 10 years, Budget Committee member for 5 years and an Appeal Board member for 15 years. He was a 4H leader for 15 years and was a member of the Buxton Grange.
He is predeceased by his beloved wife- Ethel Lewis; brother- Warren Lewis; and sister- Florence Reed.
Bill is survived by his children- Stanley E. Lewis and his wife Cynthia of Alfred, Alden D. Lewis of Exeter, NH, and Wendy R. Lewis of North Waterboro; nine grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild.
