Obituary:
China – Steven Wayne Baker passed away peacefully at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House with his family by his side on February 24, 2023.
Steve was born in Presque Isle on May 19, 1957, the son of Lloyd and Arlene (Farley) Baker. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Theology from Berkshire Christian College in 1979. Serving as a pastor throughout New England, he spent over four decades in ministry. In addition to preaching, teaching, and mentoring, Steve taught at Lighthouse Christian Academy in West Greenwich, RI.
A county boy at his core, Steve grew up hunting and fishing. While reminiscing about his childhood, he would recount the adventures he had with his father, brothers, and grandfather out in the woods. The only stories to get more laughs were the confessions of the antics he would get into with his brothers. In 1975 after graduating from high school, Steve left Aroostook County for college where he met his wife, Nadeen.
For nearly twenty years, Steve and his family called Rhode Island home. Both Steve and Nadeen worked for Gospel Temple Christian Academy (later Lighthouse Christian Academy) as teachers. Before leaving Rhode Island, Steve would fulfill many roles at the church and school - teacher, associate pastor, administrator, and basketball coach among them.
In July of 2000, the family would move to Maine. Steve was always fond of Maine, desiring to return one day to his roots. The return brought a couple of changes, Steve went to work as a crisis counselor before returning to ministry and he gained two daughters-in-law. Steve left Maine in 2008 when he answered the call to pastor in Springfield, Massachusetts. During his time in Massachusetts, Steve's ministry expanded when he connected with the Springfield Rescue Mission.
Steve enjoyed playing cribbage and board games with family and friends, watching the New England Patriots, Boston Red Sox, and college basketball. He loved to read, sit by the fire pit, and especially spending time with his pets.
He is survived by his wife, Nadeen (Verrill) Baker; his daughter, Melinda Baker; his son, Joshua Baker and his wife Meagan Baker; and his son, Brian Baker and his wife, Breanna Baker; his brothers Stan Baker and Jeff Baker, and 5 grandchildren - Madysen, Josiah, Saylah, Jonah, and Levi.
