Obituary:
Terese M. (Cullen) Murphy – 93, passed away on Wednesday September 16th at her daughter Barbara Ahern’s home in Biddeford Pool, Maine. Terese was the widow of John C. Murphy who passed away in January 2020. Born in Stoneham, Ma. Terese was the beloved only child of Gertrude (Murphy) Cullen and Jack Cullen of Malden, Ma. Terese enjoyed a fun filled childhood especially summering on the shores at Hampton Beach every year. It was the beginning of a lifelong love affair with the seashore. She graduated from Girls Catholic High School in Malden, in 1944 and attended Emmanuel College.
In 1948 she married “Johnny” Murphy and moved to Woburn. Terese and Johnny lived and worked in Woburn for the next sixty-eight years raising their three daughters, June, Barbara and Terrie. Terese worked at the Cambridge District Court and then the Woburn District Court as an administrative clerk. But Terese was not a career girl, her children were the focus of her life, first last and always. Terese loved to travel and enjoyed many trips with her children and grandchildren to Hawaii, Paris , London, Ireland , Bermuda, Florida and of course California.
Terese was a mom who really listened, truly cared and sacrificed to help her girls. All three girls earned advanced degrees and built successful lives with her support. Terese’s involvement and devotion never waivered whether they were 15 or 50 years old. Terese always held her girls close, but with an open hand allowing them the freedom to spread their wings and find their own paths. She was there to lend a helping hand or sympathetic ear. Terese had four grandchildren, Cory, Darcy, Ryan and Collin. They lit up her life with joy. She was happiest when talking, playing or just being with them. They all new they had the truest friend in the world in Grandma. Like the Giving Tree in Shel Silversteins famous book, Terese gave all she had to her children and grandchildren.
In 2016, Terese went to live with her daughter Barbara, her husband Brian and their dog Beau. It was a very special time for all of them. A time filled with laughter and love, hot fudge sundaes and walks down memory lane. Terese was so happy to be summering again by the sea.
The wide world we live in may not notice Terrie’s passing, but her life was a life truly well lived. She chose wisely in devoting her life to her family and friends. She will never be forgotten. She will live on forever in the lives of her children and grandchildren.
Terese is held in loving memory by her three daughters, June Morris, her husband James of Andover, Barbara Ahern, her husband Brian of Acton and Terrie Firestone, her husband Curtis of Hillsborough, CA. As well as her dear grandchildren John Cory Ahern, his wife Kirstie of NM, Darcy Ahern of CT and Ryan and Collin Firestone of CA.
