Obituary:
Demetria Leon Chadbourne, 66, died Wednesday, May 29 at home in Gorham, Maine. Throughout her life, Demetria was known for her enthusiasm, energy, passion, and love. Above all she loved God, her family and making a difference for others. Her tenacity and drive set her apart and there was no more fierce advocate in business or in life than Demetria.

Demetria was born in 1953 in The Bronx, New York and moved to Waterboro, Maine at the age of 3. She was the daughter of Nicholas (Leoutsacos) Leon and Alice Kouzounas Leon.

Known at the time by her childhood nickname “Mitzi,” Demetria attended Sanford High School and graduated in the second-ever graduating class of Massabesic High School in 1971, where she was head cheerleader and a delegate to Girls State, where she was named “Miss Dirigo” for congeniality. She proudly graduated from the University of Maine at Orono in 1975 with a degree in education, where she was recognized as a Sophomore Eagle and an All Maine Woman.

In 1976, Demetria married the love of her life, Dennis Chadbourne, with whom she had two children, Kyra and Aaron. After her love for Christ, family was the cornerstone of Demetria’s life, and her children were her proudest accomplishment.

Professionally, Demetria is most well-known for her real estate career, spanning over three decades, thousands of homes sold, and several hundred million dollars of real estate transacted.

She first joined ERA Willis-McNally, later ERA Agency 1, and finally opened her own company in 2003 where she led Demetria’s Team - The Real Estate Group. Throughout Greater Portland the bright red signs bearing her smiling photo were ubiquitous, often accompanied by the rider “SOLD: Demetria Did it Again!”

During her time with ERA, Demetria consistently ranked as the #1 ERA agent in the state of Maine, and ranked #2 in the United States. In 1995, she was recognized as a Star by the Howard Brinton Star Power network, which recognized Realtors in the top 1% of agents in the country. The Stars became an extended family that she cherished.

Prior to her success in real estate, Demetria taught briefly at Massabesic and Cape Elizabeth High Schools before becoming the physical education teacher at Gorham High School where she coached field hockey, leading her teams to win 3 state championships and 5 Western Maine titles. In 2007 she was inducted into the Maine Field Hockey Hall of Fame.

Demetria is survived by her husband Dennis of Gorham; two children Dr. Kyra Chadbourne of Portland and Aaron Chadbourne of Gorham; sister Tula Fanjoy of Myerstown, PA and brother Peter Leon and his wife Ruth of Wells, ME; sister-in-law Donna Jordan and her husband Carl of Boothbay, ME; and nieces and nephews Nichole and George Raftopoulos; Michael, Danae, Cyrus, Xander and Aslyn Fanjoy; Alison & Jacquelyn Leon, Matthew and Laura Leon; Susan and David Jordan and Michael Wilusz.
