Friends and family may call at Old Orchard Beach Funeral Home, 36 Portland Avenue, Old Orchard Beach on Monday, January 7, 2019 from 4pm-7pm. A funeral service will be held at the Old Orchard Beach funeral home on Tuesday, January 8, 2018 at 10am. Spring burial will be at the Southern Maine Veterans Cemetery in Springvale. Obituary:
Old Orchard Beach – Robert L. Pettengill, Sr. passed away peacefully on December 28, 2018 at the Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough with his family by his side. He was born on November 13, 1929 on his doorstep in Old Orchard Beach to Avonell Whitten and Albert Sherman Pettengill. Bob was educated in the Old Orchard Beach schools. He enlisted in the Army and served from 1948-1952 in the Korean Conflict. Bob received a lifetime achievement award from the State of Maine for his service to the Veterans of Foreign War and the Nation. Bob was a member of VFW#7997 Old Orchard Beach, he served as its Commander 27 times as well as the VFW National Chief of Staff for the State of Maine. Robert was also a 27 year member of the American Legion Post # 57 of Old Orchard Beach.
Bob worked ice deliveries when he was younger and worked at Allied Shoe and Fiber Materials for many years.
On November 3, 2018, Bob received the “Apple Cane” made from the oldest apple tree in Old Orchard Beach for being the oldest living resident born in Old Orchard.
Bob enjoyed bowling, dancing and playing 151 card game, stock car racing and hunting, but he especially loved spending time with his family. He was also a huge Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots fan!
He was predeceased by a daughter Rosalie Bass and a sister Edna Mae Neveaux.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years Lauraine Methot Pettengill of Old Orchard, sons David Pettengill and his wife Young of Olympia, WA, Robert Pettengill, Jr. of Old Orchard, and Harold “Eddie” Pettengill and his wife Jenn of Buxton; daughters Cynthia Ayotte and her husband Roger of Dayton, Joanne Savage and her husband Gary of Arundel, and Robin Huguenin and her husband Alan of Dayton, a brother Ralph Pettengill and his wife Louise of Waterboro and a sister Priscilla Gregoire and her husband Paul of Waterboro, 16 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren.
