Margaret Rumery, 87
BIDDEFORD – Margaret “Peggy” Rumery, 87, of Granite Point passed peacefully Friday, December 16th, 2016, at the St. Andre’s Health Care Facility in Biddeford.
She was born in Augusta on July 21, 1929 to parents Harry and Dorothy (Folsom) Henderson. She was the youngest of three children; her two older brothers, Harry and Roy. Peggy graduated from Cony High School in 1947, and continued her studies at the University of Maine, Farmington, and Chamberlain Junior College of Boston, culminating in a Bachelor’s of Arts degree. She worked in sales for the Porteous, Mitchell and Braun Company.
On June 25, 1955 Margaret Henderson married Earle Rodger Rumery. Together, they raised their three children and Earle’s son from a previous marriage, on the ocean at Granite Point in Biddeford. As an industrious homemaker, Peggy was always baking and sewing. Her family has fond memories of her apple pie, jelly rolls, tarts, and pancakes every Sunday morning. Peggy was a precise seamstress and veracious knitter, dedicating the time and labor of her craft to support church fairs and providing thousands of hats and mittens to local schools for children in need.
In 1962 Earle and Peggy founded Rumery’s Boatyard, a business she lovingly supported Earle in running until the 1980’s. In retirement Peggy and Earle spent their summers on the shores of Lower Sabao Lake, hand building a post and beam cabin, and winters on their 52-foot boat, the Margaret Jane, traversing the coast of Florida and the Bahamas.
Starting at a young age, Peggy lived her life enjoying the outdoors in all forms. She treasured time with family pets – always having a soft spot for cats and dogs. She thrived in competitive games of basketball, baseball and football with her brothers, and heated card games with her grandchildren. She explored the world with her husband, and she helped to create a world for her children and grandchildren.
Peggy is survived by her brother Harry Henderson; three children, Susan R. Schultz, Turner Rumery, and Martha Moravick; her step son, Stephen Rumery; and seven grandchildren: Eben Schultz, Matthew Schultz, Sarah Moravick, Andrew Moravick, Shawn Rumery, Ben Rumery, and Adam Rumery.
Visiting hours will be Tuesday from 10:30AM to 11:30 with a brief service to follow at Dennett, Craig and Pate on Main Street in Saco. Father David Robinson will be officiating. In lieu of flowers please donate in Peggy’s memory to the Animal Welfare Society in Kennebunk Maine.
