Obituary:
Biddeford, Samantha “Sammie” Cates passed away Thursday July 21, 2016, wearing a “Sammie Strong” t-shirt at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough with her family by her side.
Sammie was born January 24, 1972 in Toronto, Canada, attending local schools and later graduating from Tilton Prep in New Hampshire. After attending Colby Sawyer College, she moved to Southern Maine, where she received her degree in Behavioral Science from SMCC.
Most recently she worked at the York County Corrections in Alfred.
She enjoyed crafts, roller blading, lunch dates, softball and attending her children’s sporting events.
Sammie is survived by her husband Cash Cates of Biddeford, daughters Amethyst Hersom of Portland and Cassidy Cates of Kennebunk, sons Bailey and C.J. Thorne of Biddeford, Cameron Cates of Biddeford and Ajay Cates of Hollis, her mother, brothers and sisters.

Saddened to learn of Sam's passing. I knew her as a young woman. Her adoptive Mother, Judith Teller was a friend who adored Sam. Judith, also an adopted child, struggled in her role as Mother to Sam. She tried valiantly to be a good grandmother to Bailey. Judith died tragically in a car crash in Orangeville, Ontario. She would be even more devastated to learn of Sam's sad struggle with cancer. Best wishes to all the family.
