Obituary:
Lizzie S. (Holmes) Griffin, age 100, passed away on January 2, 2015 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough, surrounded by her family. She was born in Halcomb, New Brunswick, Canada on August 15, 1914 to Fred and Annie Holmes. Lizzie graduated in the top of her high school class and following graduation, traveled to Biddeford to study nursing at the Trull Nursing School. She became a registered nurse and spent the early years of her career as a private duty nurse in York County.
On June 23, 1939, she married Henry M. Griffin in New Hampshire. They settled in Biddeford, where they raised their daughters together. Lizzie worked at Webber Hospital, and eventually Southern Maine Medical Center as a medical/surgical nurse, retiring in 1982 at the age of 68. She greatly enjoyed her nursing career and treated each patient with the same care she would give her own family.
Lizzie was a wonderful cook and enjoyed baking bread and desserts for her family and the many guests who would visit her home. She and Henry enjoyed weekend getaways to their cottage in Turbat’s Creek in Kennebunkport, as well as annual trips each September to visit her family in New Brunswick.
She was a life time member of Annette Chapter #184 Order of the Eastern Star.
Lizzie was predeceased by her husband in 1990; a daughter, Patricia in 1996; her brothers Hubert, Buel, Bill and Gayer Holmes; her sisters Reta Blackmore and Dot Brennan; and special cousins, Bertha Lombard and John Lombard.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Lawrence Dolby of Saco with whom she resided; her granddaughter and her husband, Christina and Robert O’Brien of Saco; two great-granddaughters, Courtney and Sarah O’Brien of Saco; a sister, Molly Emery of Saco and many nieces and nephews.

I would like to express my condolences to Sandra and family. I remember Aunt Liz with fondness. I will never forget the amazing whoopie pies she made. Love, Kim

My heart and love are with you --Sandra, Lawrence, Chris, Bob, Courtney, Sarah and family, today and always. Oh, those chocolate chip cookies gave me great joy (and a few pounds) whenever Nana made a big batch. May you always know her love for all of you and be comforted by so many wonderful memories. Love, Judy (and Bill).
