Francis Cowan, Jr., 87, a resident of Saco, died the evening of August 26, 2014 at the Kindred Assisted Living Monarch Center, Saco, ME.
He was born March 16, 1927, in New Rochelle, NY, son of Francis and Mildred (Mager) Cowan, and was a graduate of Norwich University Cadet Corps and Norwich University. He pursued graduate studies at the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs (Syracuse University). In later life he also graduated from the International Travel Training School.
He served in the U.S. Navy, advancing from Apprentice Seaman to the rank of Storekeeper Third Class Petty Officer (SK3c) and was honorably discharged from service on August 12, 1946 after serving in the Philippine Islands and other Asia-Pacific locations.
He was employed by the Paper Converters Association (formerly the Paper, Stationery & Tablet Manufacturers Association) as Executive Secretary and previously held management and research positions with the National Industrial Conference Board, National Association of Manufacturers, Municipal Finance Officers Association, General Motors and the Government Research Institute. Most recently he was a consultant and account executive for American Travel Trust of Arlington, VA and Travel Department, Inc. of Arlington, VA. In retirement he worked part time for the York County Coast Star.
He served as President & Director of the International Travel Society and was a member of the American Society of Association Executives, New York Society of Association Executives and Washington Society of Association Executives.
He moved to Kennebunk in 1987 and enjoyed photography, travel and his dogs.
He was married to Heather M. (Rae) Cowan with whom he shared 35 years of marriage and who predeceased him on Aug. 16, 2001.
He was predeceased by his sister Helene (Cowan) Taylor of Stratford, CT (d. 2009) and daughter Cynthia L. Cowan of Santa Rosa, CA (d. 2011). Survivors include two daughters from a previous marriage, Sandra L. Reber of Embreeville, PA and Karen L. Van Scoyk of Steamboat Springs, CO; three half-brothers, Craig Cowan of Peekskill, NY, Bruce Cowan of Rutland, VT and Robert T. Beard of Smithville, GA; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
