Obituary:
BUXTON/GROVEVILLE- Helena E. Stevens of Buxton, died peacefully on July 4th (her favorite holiday) with her children by her side. She was born on February 7, 1929 in Buxton to Sanford and Minnie Field.
She attended local schools and graduated from Buxton High School, class of 1947. “Leaping Lena” was her nickname while she played basketball and it was here she met her late husband, Donald “Chip” Stevens. She was employed at Sebago Moc Shoe in Westbrook for many, many years as a stitcher. She was well known in the community for her delicious coleslaw, that was a hit at the many local bean suppers and her famous homemade peanut butter fudge that she only made at Christmas time. Her family eagerly waited for this yearly treat. It was said, they even hid pieces in their bedrooms from rival siblings.
Helena enjoyed BINGO, local fairs, harness racing, fresh scallops, fishing and camping in Salem, Maine and being with her children, grandkids and great grandkids. She attended an endless schedule of her kids and grandkids sporting events. She and Chip would be found at field hockey, soccer, track & field, basketball and baseball games over a span of 40 plus years. Later in life, she discovered slots and loved going to Hollywood Slots with friends and her loving niece and nephew, Mr. & Mrs. Charles Davis. She did puzzles, word games and crosswords during her later years. Helena was an avid wild bird feeder during the winters. She would endlessly complain about the squirrels eating her offerings to anyone that would listen. She was known as “Ma” by all the local kids that visited her home.
She had two sisters, Mildred and Gloria, and five brothers, William, Sanford, George, Arnold, and Richard. She is predeceased by all, except Sanford, who lives in Gorham. She is survived by sons, Michael and his fiancé Darlene Schelling of Standish and Sanford and his fiancé Sandra Dubay of Biddeford, daughters Norma and husband Timothy Porter of Hollis and Susan and her husband William Tompson of Standish. Helena lived her final days with Susan and Bill in their loving home. She had 7 Grandchildren and 9 Great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, July 10th at Highland Cemetery in Buxton (Groveville) on Church Hill Road at 11:00 AM. All attending are asked to join the family for a gathering in the neighboring church after the service.
Arrangements are with Dennett, Craig & Pate Funeral Home – Buxton. www.DCPate.com

My condolences to all of the Stevens family. Mrs. Stevens was a nice person & pleasant to be around. She always made sure all the kids hanging out in downtown Grooveyville had a sandwich to eat at lunchtime, especially if you had traveled from as far away as West Buxton to get there. She will be missed.

My thoughts and prayers go out to each of you! If I had been in state: I would have come. Your Mom was a very kind and caring Lady. Much Love, Crysty
