Our family would like to thank the wonderful caregivers at St. Andre Health Care and York Manor for their compassionate care of Cynthia. Visiting hours will be 5:00pm – 7:00pm, Monday, April 15 and a memorial service will be held at 11:00am on Tuesday, April 16 at Dennett, Craig and Pate, 365 Main St., Saco. Obituary:
Cynthia P. Rice died peacefully at St. Andre Health Care Facility in Biddeford on April 7, 2013. She was born August 13, 1922 at home on Longwood Ave. in Old Orchard Beach to Clement P. and L. Gertrude (Jones) Wight.

Her childhood years were happy, summering with family on the Jones Farm in Brunswick and attending the Durham Friends (Quaker) Meeting House. Cynthia graduated from Old Orchard Beach High School in 1939. In 1941 she graduated with a Medical Secretarial Degree from Westbrook Junior College (UNE) and worked at New England Deaconess Hospital in Boston. She met her husband, Gordon, in Boston two days before the attack on Pearl Harbor. They were married in 1945 while he was on leave from the Army Air Corps. In 1950 they bought an 1830 house in North Saco where they raised four children and sold vegetables at their road-side stand and to commercial vendors.

Cynthia was a founding member of the Saco Unitarian Universalist Church and also very active in the Westbrook UU Church. She was a volunteer for the American Cancer Society.

At forty Cynthia got her driver’s license and in her eighties took her first Harley motorcycle ride with her son-in-law and sailed Casco Bay with her daughter.

Cynthia was predeceased by her husband of fifty eight years, Gordon, her sister Ruth Durant and brother Paul Wight. She is survived by her children, Karlene Osborne and spouse, Thomas; Dianne Horton and spouse Daniel; Brian Rice and partner Bonnie Gobeil ; and Kenneth Rice and partner Jeanmarie Stabile. She is survived by grandchildren: Thomas Osborne, Jr. and spouse Mollie; Danson Horton and spouse Shannon; Rob Horton and spouse Marissa; Kayla Andrews and spouse Frank; Annie Rice; Jasmine Rice; Melissa Witek and spouse Stephen; and seven great grandchildren. She is also survived by niece Geraldine Durant Yates and spouse William; brother-in-law Erroll Rice and spouse Peggy; sister-in-law Connie Tessier; and many nieces and nephews.
