Obituary:
Old Orchard Beach, L. Esther Gilbert, 86, of Eden Lane passed away Friday February 8, 2013 at the Seal Rock Healthcare facility in Saco after a courageous 10 year battle with Alzheimers. She was born in St. Johnsbury, Vermont on May 26, 1926 the daughter of John and Vaun Annis Allgrove. At the age of ten, Esther moved with her family from St. Johnsbury to Old Orchard Beach. She attended Old Orchard Beach schools and as a young women was employed at Pepperell Manufacturing in Biddeford. Esther was also an active Avon representative for many years.

In 1957, she married Carl F. Gilbert of Skowhegan. The couple resided in Old Orchard Beach where Mrs. Gilbert owned and operated Allgrovesís Greenhouse until the 1970ís. After the birth of their daughter, Pam, Mrs. Gilbert became a devoted mother and homemaker and an active member of her community. Mrs. Gilbert was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and also a ballot clerk for the Town of Old Orchard Beach for many years. She loved visiting and volunteering at local businesses and would often bring baked goods to many of them on a regular basis.

One of her favorite pastimes was greeting the public works crews in the morning hours and providing them with assorted snacks and beverages. She greeted each new day as a day to do for others. She was a small woman with a big heart. She enjoyed country music; especially Dolly Parton, playing her guitar, singing and yodeling. Esther also had a love for collecting coin banks, cookie jars, anything related to Coca Cola and cow memorabilia. She enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, animals and spending time with her two granddaughters whom she considered her most treasured gifts.

Mrs. Gilbert was cared for at home for many years by her loving husband Carl, and loving daughter Pam. Her family would like to thank Sue Descoteaux for her many years of in-home care and the entire staff at Seal Rock Healthcare for their compassionate care and concern. She will be sadly missed by her surviving family members as well as all those who knew her.

Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Carl of Old Orchard Beach, a daughter Pam Croteau and her husband Michael of Old Orchard Beach, a brother Donald Allgrove of Delray Beach, Fl, and 2 grandchildren, Jessica and Jennifer Croteau of Saco.

To Pam Croteau, My deepest sympathies for the your loss of your mother. Though I only met her a couple of times, she was always upbeat and had a pleasant smile. May she rest in peace now. God Bless. John, Santa, Brandon and Kathryn Lessard
