Obituary:
Scarborough- Brenda J. Carrier, 69, of Scarborough, passed away February 27, 2023 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House after a brave battle with cancer.
Brenda was born on July 1, 1953 in Portland to the late Eugene and Phyllis (Priest) Carrier. She grew up in Scarborough and attended Scarborough High School. After graduation, Brenda attended Kennebec Valley Vocational Technical Institute (KVVTI) where she received her degree as a medical assistant. During this time, she met her first love and husband of nearly thirty years, James Monteith. After college, Brenda was employed at Westbrook Community Hospital. In 1975, she married Jimmy and accompanied him to Minot, North Dakota, where he was stationed in the Air Force. When they returned to Maine, they bought a house in East Waterboro and started a family.
For many years, Brenda cared for her children, home, and gardens. After coping with an unexpected divorce, she began a new chapter of her life. A nurturing sister, family members, and close friends helped Brenda discover new interests and pleasures. Brenda bought her own house, dated, began a career as an Administrative Assistant at Kaplan University, and took trips to exotic places. Brenda enjoyed nurturing her beautiful flowers, cooking for others, watching shows about spirits and unexplained phenomena, spending time with friends and neighbors, and spoiling her grandchildren.
Brenda will be remembered as an extremely generous, friendly, and caring woman. With a license plate that read, “I CAN,” Brenda’s courage, positivity, and humor in spite of her illness was inspirational.
Brenda is survived by her sister, Marcelle (Carrier) Burke of Murrells Inlet, SC; her brother, Gordon Carrier of East Waterboro; her daughter, Sarah (Monteith) Mills and her husband Josh of Sanford. She also leaves behind Natalie Mills, Alyssa Monteith, Lillian Rains, and Connor Farrell who are her beloved grandchildren and step grandchildren. Brenda was predeceased by her parents and her son, John Monteith.

Brenda was a wonderful loving and positive person. She was always welcoming, friendly, and fun. She had an easy laugh and laughed often. She went through so much over the last number of years and yet she was still positive thinking, still joking and laughing. She maintained that positive outlook on life. I will truly miss her, but I know that she is in a much better place now. Peace and love.
