Obituary:
Saco – Stephen A. Buzzell, Jr. age 82, of Buxton Road, Saco passed away on Wednesday, November 16, 2022 at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford. He was born April 19, 1940 in Saco, the son of Stephen Buzzell and Lillian Bennett. He attended Saco schools and graduated from Thornton Academy in 1959. He attended Northeastern University for 2 years and York County Community College for 2 years. He served in the US Army stationed in Germany for 1962 to 1964.
He then started work as a meatcutter for First National Stores. He became involved in the Meatcutter’s Union and was elected as a Trustee, Local 385 Executive Board in 1977. He was instrumental in organizing an opposition slate of officers in 1979 that successfully swept out the incumbents in 1980. He was elected secretary-treasurer. Local 385 merged with Local1445 of the United Food and Commercial workers Union out of Boston and he finished his career as a Business Agent and Labor Negotiator and was a tireless advocate for the memberships. He retired from the United Food and Commercial Workers Labor Union in 1998.
Stephen and his wife also owned and operated the Sir Charles Motel on East Grand Avenue in Old Orchard Beach. Stephen was a member of the VFW and the American Legion.
Steve loved all Boston sports and Boston Sports Talk shows on the radio and television. He also loved spending time his family. Especially his grandson Chase. He could often be found doing yardwork and loved the outdoors. He and his wife enjoyed walking and many years of travel.
Stephen was predeceased by a son Michael Buzzell, a brother Richard Buzzell and 5 sisters Christine Fournier, Agnes Smith, Barbara Levasseur, Rosemary Lucier and Betty Heyhal.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years Jean Buzzell, a son Mark Buzzell and his wife Jennifer, 4 brothers George Buzzell and his wife Margaret, Charles Buzzell, Fred Buzzell and his wife Mary, and David Buzzell and his wife Sally and a grandson Chase Buzzell.
