Obituary:
BUXTON/GROVEVILLE- Bernard “Bernie” Groves, 68, passed away at his home on Groveville Road in Buxton on Sunday, December 4th, 2011 after his brief battle with terminal cancer. Bernie worked for the United Parcel Service (UPS) for thirty years, retiring at age 55, amassing a safe driving record for the entire time. After retiring, he enjoyed spending time at his camp, four wheeling, snowmobiling, woodworking, traveling, or just reading a good book. When not working or at camp, Bernie was active within the town, serving with the Buxton Fire Department for 29 years. He was forced to step down from his position as Captain after sustaining injuries he received while performing hose inspections for the department. After the accident, he concentrated his efforts on finding and applying for grants that would improve services that the fire department provides. Bernie also just recently served as the assistant director of the Emergency Management Agency (EMA) for Buxton. After he retired, he could be seen visiting with people around town, always with a smile on his face.
He is survived by his wife, Audrey Groves; his daughter Sherry Ames and her husband Chris of San Diego, California; his son Charlie Groves and his wife Lisa of Durham, Maine. He is preceded by his granddaughter Amber Meadows and is survived by his grandchildren Wendy Nobles, Chip Meadows, and Ashley Groves, along with several great grandchildren.
