A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, April 26, 2022 at 2pm at Scarborough Memorial Cemetery, Old Blue Point Road, Scarborough. In lieu of flowers, Laurine requested that you make a donation to Scarborough Fire and Rescue.
Avis Laurine Thompson (ne Reynolds) passed away on the morning of 19 March 2022 at the age of 98, while residing comfortably at the Country Village Assisted Living facility in Casco, ME. The daughter of Ethyl G. and Lt jg Verner H. Reynolds, Laurine was born on 19 May 1923 and grew up in Cape Elizabeth, ME in the shadows of Two Lights. She graduated from the public school system in that town. She was the first in her family to earn a college degree as she went on to Becker College in Worcester, MA following high school.
Laurine married George R. Leavitt in 1942 and brought up their family of five children in Scarborough, ME. She worked at Todd Bath Shipbuilding during World War II and went on to work in the office of Snow’s Canning Company starting in 1963. She was pre-deceased by George in 1963 and married Clifford Thompson in 1969. Together they built and operated the Wild Duck Camping Area in Scarborough until retiring in 1989. Upon retirement, Laurine and Tommy spent many great winters in Zephyr Hills and New Port Richey, Florida and summers at Estes Lake in Alfred, ME. She was pre-deceased by Clifford Thompson in 1999.
Laurine had five children and was pre-deceased by her son Scott A. Leavitt in 1994 and her son Richard Brent Leavitt in 2015.
She is survived by her daughter, Suzanne E. Burnham with partner Jon Roberts from Gorham, ME with her children Lisa, Lindsey, and pre-deceased by her son Eddie. Her sons are Lee R. Leavitt and spouse Avis of Scarborough, ME with their children Jason and Ami, and Dr. Dale F. Leavitt and spouse Liese Siemann of East Falmouth, MA with their children Jasper and Gibson. She is also survived by Scott’s children Nathan and Kris, as well as a multitude of great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
Laurine was also pre-deceased by her two sisters Gracia Benoit of Candia, NH and Patricia Connor of Virginia Beach, VA.
Mom was a strong person who raised her family as a single mom for much of their formative years. While we never wanted, she sacrificed greatly to make that happen and we are eternally grateful for her support and love.
