Obituary:
Janet Elizabeth Jones Stebbins passed away trampled by butterflies on Wednesday, September 8th in Saco, ME

Born in 1954 in Honolulu, HI to Aldred Wilson Jones and Eleanor Rogers Wideman, she grew up on Air Force bases around the US and moved frequently. When her mother died in 1963, her father married Sara MacLean Walker, her beloved second mother.

Janet attended high school in Germany and England and graduated with honors from U of ME with a BA in English. Following a Mastersí Degree from Tufts, she taught at private schools in Maine, Illinois, Massachusetts, and Connecticut, including Cushing Academy and Pomfret School where she finished her career as Academic Dean. In 1984 she married John Blodgett Stebbins while teaching together at Cushing Academy. After she retired, they moved to Maine and lived in the Scarborough area until Johnís death. Janet then moved to downtown Portland where she served as Board President of OLLI, the local senior college for several years.

Janet was a published poet; loved a good game of Bridge; a midnight adventure to LL Bean; sci-fi movies and any British TV show. Her favorite place on earth was her beloved cottage on an island off the coast of Maine where she spent many happy summers with family accompanied by her rescued dogs and cats.

During the final months of her full life, the family was especially grateful to Jay Rogers who filled her home with his musical gifts; Ted Clauson who encouraged Janet to immerse herself in her poetry; and to all the friends and family who visited, sent cards and called. Thanks to Ted, one of Janetís many poems was accepted for publication on the day she passed. She leaves a legacy of goofy humor, questionable puns, and boisterous laughter.

Janet is predeceased by her father, first mother, and husband. She is survived by her second mother, Sara Walker Jones; sister, Heather (The Late Anthony) Sano; brother, Thomas (Lisa) Jones; nephew, Christopher MacLean Sano; niece, Madelyn Claire Sano; her stepdaughter, Elizabeth (Steve) Torkelsen and their daughters, Emily and Kristina; the entire Rogers clan; and a multitude of true friends.

The family would like to thank Hospice of Southern Maine and her private nurse and honorary family member, Earold Bennett for his extraordinary care of Janet Ė we are humbled by your compassion.

Janet was passionate about protecting the planet and asked that, in lieu of flowers, folks could remember her by making a donation to 350.org to help fight climate change or to St. Cuthbertís Chapel, c/o NCS Alexander Taft, 3612 Woodley Rd NW, Washington, DC 20011.

Janet was a bright light and spirit and she will shine on in our memories.
