Obituary:
Dennis Howard Schaffer of Saco, Maine, passed away peacefully on February 26, 2021. He was born in Bethlehem, PA, the son of Arthur Schaffer and Laura Schaffer (Giberson).
Dennis spent most of his childhood through high school and college in New Jersey, attending Rutgers University and eventually graduating from Glassboro State College (now Rowan University) in 1972 with a degree in Special Education. He also served in the Coast Guard Reserves for a brief period as a young adult. Throughout his career, Dennis worked as a special education teacher, a real estate agent, an appraiser, a factory worker, and a substance abuse counselor. He lived in many different locations throughout his life, starting in Pennsylvania, moving to New Jersey, Maine, St. Thomas, USVI, back to Pennsylvania, then ultimately settling again in Maine in his later years.
Dennis was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He enjoyed fishing, watching sports, especially the Patriots, and spending time with his grandchildren. He served those around him with a generous heart, most recently volunteering at the local food pantry and helping his neighbors in the complex where he lived, cleaning off cars after snow storms, making meals, and offering assistance when he saw a need. Dennis was loved and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
He was predeceased by his parents and his beloved wife of 31 years, Patricia “Patsy” (Engstrom) Schaffer. He is survived by his two daughters: Karen Schaffer and Tara Hatfield and her husband Keith. He also leaves his step-children: Tracey Corbitt and her husband DJ, and Travis Harriman and his wife Denise. He leaves five grandchildren: Kegan, Lindsey, Jack, Kaitlin, and Jaci. He is also survived by his brother Larry Schaffer, his wife Sandra, and children Lori and Michael.
