Marilyn Ann Harshanyi, 61, of South Street passed away August 30, 2012 at Southern Maine Medical Center. She was born in Dover, New Jersey on October 6, 1950, the daughter of Berti and Mary Harshanyi. She was a graduate of Morris Hills Regional High School in Rockaway, NJ in 1968 and Dover Business College in Dover, NJ. She had chosen Maine as her home, moving here in 1993. She considered her friends as her surrogate family and had recently connected with her natural family in New Jersey. She was well known for her psychic-holistic fairs, her dinner parties, and her exquisite needlepoint. Marilyn was the author of 3 books, “My Ages 8 & Up Cookbook,” Men Behaving Badly: A Single Woman’s Guide to Internet Dating,” and the just completed “In My Mother’s Shadow.” She also contributed articles to local papers on spiritual topics. She considered herself a medium and developed her ability following a near-drowning accident as a child when she had a near-death experience. She studied with a renowned spiritualist, Rev. Bea Miller. She was about to retire from hosting fairs. She had recently completed a large needlepoint tribute for Whoopi Goldberg, designed to include all of her film, television, and written accomplishments. She loved animals and adopted two shelter cats, Shadow and Ginger. She is survived by her former husband, Gary Broad, and her family of friends in Maine. A celebration of her life will be held at Two Lights State Park on September 29th at noon with a rain date of September 30th. I met Marilyn in October, 2010 in Salem when she stopped by my table for a reading. She contacted me again through my church in the Fall of 2011 to tell me how accurate my reading had been, and asked me to come visit to read for her, along with some friends. I spent 4 days with Marilyn in November of 2011 and she was very kind to me, cooking for me and looking after me. I must have put 10lbs on in those 4 days alone. What I liked most about Marilyn was her enthusiasm and sense of humor. Nothing seemed to get her down for long. We talked about her getting involved with Psychic Fairs again, and I encouraged her to go for it. Once I got home, after reading for all of her wonderful friends, we stayed in touch and she let me know how she was getting on with the Fairs. It was a lot of work for her, I know, but I really feel she was making a difference and I urged her to keep going. I had not spoken with her for a couple of weeks, when I got a call out of the blue from a friend of hers, followed by a call from her niece in New Jersey, to let me know that she'd passed away that day. It was a big shock as I know she'd only lost her mother a few months prior. I hope that she is at peace with things now, trying out her new recipes, and cooking with the Angels. She will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her. Marion x
