Obituary:
Robert J. Macartney, 94, of Wonderbrook Drive, Kennebunk passed away Wednesday December 4, 2019 at this residence. He was born December 6, 1924 in Lawrence, Massachusetts the son of Robert and Ruth Summersby Macartney.
Robert attended Pennsylvania Military College before joining the United States Army.
While serving in the US Army, his unit the 55th Amoured Division served in the Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe. He served under General Patton and was reported missing in action while being held prisoner of War. He was freed in May of 1945 by the US Soldiers .
Robert rose to the rank of Corporal and received many distinctions including Purple Heart and Ex. POW Medal and Bronze Star.
After his service to his country, Robert later graduated from Bowdoin College.While in college, he met Lenore Dignam of Nashua, NH. Robert joined his father and brother in the clothing business, founded in 1881 by his grandfather. Robert expanded the business to five stores.
Robert was an ardent golfer and Master Bridge Player.
