Obituary:
OCEAN PARK, Maine -- Rev. Robert M. Smith, 91, of Ocean Park, passed away June 25, 2012, at St. Andre Health Care Facility in Biddeford, following a long illness.
He was born Dec. 2, 1920 in Boston, Mass. He grew up in Medford, graduating from Medford High School in 1939. He graduated from Gordon College of Theology and Missions in 1943, and from Gordon Divinity School in 1949.
He was ordained in Bowdoinham in 1947 while serving in the Bowdoinham Baptist Church. Beginning in 1948, Rev. Smith served as minister at the Chelmsford Street Baptist Church in Lowell, Mass. In 1956, he became minister of the First Baptist Church in Sanford where he served for 29 years until his retirement in 1985. He also served in the Ministers' Association, Rotary Club, and as Chairman of the Sanford Housing Authority. Upon his retirement, he and his wife moved to Ocean Park and wintered in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
The Smith family summered in Ocean Park for many years. During the 1950's, Rev. Smith served as Director at the Royal Ambassador Boys' Camp in Ocean Park and, from 1971 - 1981, held the position of Ocean Park Association Superintendent.
Rev. Smith's love of the Boston Red Sox was second only to his love of God and family. He became a Red Sox fan in his youth and remained a loyal fan throughout his life. He is honored at Fenway Park with a brick installed as part of Fenway's 100th anniversary celebration, given to him by his daughter, Becky.
Rev. Smith is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ellen (Ober) Smith; identical twin brother, Rev. Lincoln Smith; son Robert Smith, Jr. and his wife Donna, of Port St. Lucie, Fla., daughter Deborah Bernard and her husband Omer, of Richmond, daughter Rebecca Smith and extended family member Margaret Smith, both of Concord, N.H.
A graveside service, officiated by his nephew, Rev. Robert P. Smith, will be held Friday, July 27th, at 1:00 p.m. at Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford, Mass.
