It was truly my honor and pleasure to be Andrew’s teacher. I have many fond memories of Andrew, most involve his fabulous smile and even better laugh. Andrew made us work for those smiles and laughs. One of my favorite Andrew stories took place in 2015 when one of his classmates had a pretty big “accident” while being held and there was quite a mess and some ensuing drama during clean up and Andrew just started laughing and truly seemed to enjoy the fact that his teacher was covered in pee. On a more serious note, I loved seeing Andrew’s body relax when he was able to take a ride on the Portland Wheelers bike. I was so proud when he was able to participate in Special Olympics swimming. He did awesome! He was a trooper surviving the cold at Track and Field as well. What stands out most to me about Andrew is his loving and dedicated family. While it is easy to love Andrew, Andrew’s life was NOT easy. Andrew unfortunately had to work hard every day to breathe, cough, move, keep his body inline and stay out of the hospital. The hoops his family had to go through on a daily basis was enough to make my head spin and they did all of it while raising him and his two amazing and active brothers. I had the pleasure of hanging out with Alex and Mike on occasion during some of Andrew’s earlier hospitalizations, it was clear to see the love between brothers and within this amazing family. I especially loved the time when Andrew beautifully managed his own suction machine like a pro. Andrew was a gift. I am a much better mother, teacher and friend having known Andrew and his beautiful family. I am so very sorry for your loss.
