Obituary:
Our Dear Mom and Grandmother, Della Caroline (Putnam) Roy
She is survived by her husband, Oscar Roy, one daughter, Margie (Roy) Forrester, son-in-law Randy and her granddaughter, Angela (Forrester) Gregoire, her husband Chris, Brandi her great grand-dog and Angela’s two step children, Haley and Jeff, and several nieces and nephews.
Della C. (Putnam) Roy, formerly of Dayton Maine, passed away on Sunday, May 6, 2012 at 10:15 am.
Della was the daughter of Stanford Putnam who died in 1930 and Pearl Brown Putnam who died in 1938. Both were from Fort Fairfield. Della’s sister, Marjorie Putnam D’Amico Barrett died in 1993. Both Della and her sister Marjorie graduated from Fort Fairfield H.S. and continued to be F.F.H.S. alumni their entire lives. Della’s parents, her three Aunts, Mattie, Lucia and Sarah Putnam, and Uncle Ira Putnam all made their home in Fort Fairfield Maine and raised Della and her sister, Marjorie. They all predeceased her.
She married Oscar Roy in 1946, and they moved to Biddeford Maine, where her husband owned and operated Roy’s Auto Body Shop for 30 years. Della worked over the years at Nichols & Co, Neal’s Novelty Shop, and then for several years at West Point Pepperell. She retired in 1972. She and her husband brought their daughter up in Biddeford. They moved to Dayton Maine in 1975, where they lived for 31 fairly healthy years. She loved watching their backyard deer, several birds including her beloved hummingbirds and chickadees and in recent years several wild turkeys. There was also an occasional fox, moose and one bear. She loved to garden in past years, and got a lot of enjoyment from both her flower gardens and vegetable garden. She did a lot of canning and freezing, including hundreds of quarts of dill pickles over the years – her favorite. Della loved to cook and entertain their many friends with great food and was a wonderful and happy hostess. She was the happiest while entertaining, cooking, eating good food and playing cards and an occasional game of Chinese checkers with friends and family. She never wanted to be alone – and was a wonderful storyteller, everyone loved her stories. She and her husband, Oscar, spent several winters in Florida, until she became so homesick for the family she left up north.
As the years went by, Della’s health and eyesight began to rapidly decline, and she moved to Seal Rock Healthcare in Saco. She happily resided there from December, 2010 to May 6th. Della was blessed to have an extended family with the wonderful staff at Seal Rock. She loved and embraced all of the staff, especially the nurses and the women who provided such wonderful activities. They all loved her as well as her family, bringing in their children, grandchildren, dogs and cats to visit her. They all touched her life as well as the lives of her loving family. She will be missed by her family as well as her new family at Seal Rock and Atlantic Heights. She had the wonderful and unique ability to be loved by everyone who ever met her.
Her husband Oscar of almost 65 years is residing at Atlantic Heights Assisted Living Facility. They were together every day, and were visited by family in the evenings. They were members of Christ Episcopal Church in Biddeford Maine for 61 years.
